AI is changing the hosting customer journey end-to-end, all the way from discovery through to security and growth. The hosting providers that adapt early will define the next era of the industry.
Ahead of CloudFest Americas, we caught up with TJ Danklefs, Director of Product Management at WebPros, to get his seven top predictions for 2027 and how hosting providers can get ahead of them. Over to you, TJ…
The customer journey starts with a prompt
How is the customer journey changing?
AI is becoming a key tool that customers use. Agencies and developers already work for hours a day in AI assistants such as Claude Code and ChatGPT/Codex. I expect SMBs to follow soon, and many already use AI assistants by voice. For hosts, that makes AI essential to onboarding, where customers create a site, buy a plan and manage it after launch.
How can hosts help SMBs on that journey?
Sell to the customer’s goal, not the technology. An SMB who hasn’t used WordPress doesn’t know what it is, and their goal may just be selling online. An AI entry point takes them from goal to live site without knowing the stack. Offer it two ways: through the customer’s own AI assistant and through your product. With our recent upgrades, cPanel covers both, with an in-product AI assistant and Model Context Protocol (MCP) support.
Support splits between AI and humans, and human expertise becomes premium
What should hosts hand to AI, and what should stay human?
Start where the risk is lowest. Give support staff AI-gathered account context on every ticket, so you can test the harness before customers engage with it. Once it’s reliable, let AI answer questions or act for customers within the limits you set. We’re building that feature into cPanel and most WebPros products, on functionality that has supported these actions for years. An AI assistant integrated into your client experience will reduce tier one tickets as well.
However customers engage with your AI, always make it clear when it’s AI and not a human. Customers are quickly learning which issues are faster to solve through AI and which still need a human touch. AI assistants trying to pass as humans gave agentic AI a bad reputation early on.
With AI handling tier one, does the personal touch become more valuable?
Never replace a human interaction for customers who request it. First-time issues that neither AI nor your knowledge base has seen stay with your people. As more tier one volume is automated, make sure your staffing and training reflect the new distribution of needs. If your team only gets the complex problems, do you have the right people?
Server management gets predictive
What does predictive server management look like in 2027?
Start with visibility. AI is good at consolidating context across an entire fleet. Flag configuration drift, and let AI correct it when you’re ready. Flag email or site abuse that threatens your IP reputation, then automate the fix. Both are low risk, because they separate seeing the problem from automating the fix. In the second half of 2027, I expect more advanced AI to take on proactive security patching and self-healing.
Security becomes an AI arms race
How are AI-powered attacks changing security?
Attackers now use AI to find vulnerabilities much faster, across all forms of software. Treat patch speed as part of the service. At cPanel, up to 24 hours was the accepted window for security rollouts. As security threats increased this year, we cut that to within one hour.
Will that continue into next year?
I think AI-driven detection and attacks continue into 2027. Established products are stabilizing, but many AI-generated products are coming to market with brand-new code. Few AI-built projects reach core systems with a lot of user data yet, but as those grow, so does the threat. I think that shift starts over the next 12 months. As an industry, we need to make sure our software always stays up to date and secure.
AI visibility joins SEO
What does it take to show up when people search with AI?
AI visibility means an AI assistant can find a site, understand what the business offers, and cite or recommend it in an answer. That depends on accurate, well-organized content: clear headings, direct answers to the questions customers ask, structured data such as schema markup, and pages AI crawlers can read. Most of the web isn’t kept up to date that way. Hosts can offer AI visibility checks with automated fixes as a service. It matters for your own services too: how do you get AI to recommend your hosting and services?
If you’ve got great SEO, is this a full shift?
No. Traditional search still handles most searches, and AI assistants rely on much of what good SEO already builds, so SEO is the foundation for AI visibility. AI referrals are still small, but they tend to convert better because the assistant has already matched the user’s intent. I think we’ll continue to see the tools shift throughout 2027, so build on SEO rather than replacing it.
AI agents become a new kind of customer
What changes when the customer is an AI agent?
Your products and APIs have to work for agents, because AI can act on someone’s behalf. Keep it as deterministic as you can, and give customers controls to say “I can do this, and the AI can’t do that.” When something goes wrong, blame between the AI agent and the provider gets muddy. Providers without clear controls will lose agent-driven customers to providers that have them.
Does that sit alongside a human interface?
It has to. Customers are moving toward their UI of choice, and we have to accommodate that. It could be their own AI client (such as Claude or Codex), a conventional interface, or a hybrid with AI built in. In 2027, we’ll see this split demand grow further. cPanel runs UI and chat side by side with the same capabilities, so an AI agent can perform the same actions a person can.
AI add-ons reshape the hosting bundle
What should providers add to the hosting bundle?
Package AI app hosting, such as Node.js, alongside your WordPress hosting. We’ve enabled modern package management and containerization within cPanel to provide this capability out of the box. Providers, especially those with their own infrastructure, should also look at hosting open-weight models. Data privacy laws in many regions already require data to stay in-region, and that’s a requirement many providers and businesses will face.
How much will customer expectations change in the next 12 months?
The big question is how customers will overhaul their existing sites when they need to. As WordPress sites get rebuilt with AI tools, do they stay with you? This year we’ve seen a decline in total WordPress sites, while custom builds using Node.js are up multiple percentage points in market share. I think the inflection point isn’t here yet, but we’re close, and 2027 will start to show which way it goes. That makes rebuilt sites a retention necessity even more than a growth opportunity.
