Want to understand the size of the WordPress market and see where it’s heading? Of course you do—and who better to go to for hosting data and insight than WebPros? Here’s a snapshot of the industry statistics shared by James Lee, WebPros Group Product Manager, in his standing-room-only session at CloudFest 2026.

The data comes from WebPros Insight, a new data analytics platform that crawls 2.3 billion host names every month.

Total WordPress Market Size: How many websites run WordPress?

Out of roughly 1 billion active websites, 100 million use WordPress as their primary CMS. That’s 67% of the websites monitored with a CMS, and—fun fact—one in five of those uses a WebPros control panel.

WordPress Trends in 2026

WebPros’ data show that the number of WordPress sites peaked in July 2025 and then gradually declined. James highlighted that, despite this decline, the number is up year-on-year: “So it’s not a crisis, but something to watch out for.”

The Hosting Providers Landscape

The hosting landscape is fragmented, with a few big dogs and around 250 mid-size providers competing for over 30% of the market. The numbers speak for themselves:

·   100 million WordPress sites

·   1,100+ providers competing for them

·   The top five providers control 47% of the market

·   Only 14 providers host more than 1 million WordPress sites

·   The 254 providers serving 10,000-1 million WordPress sites control 30% of the market

Inside the WordPress Plugin Ecosystem

When it comes to plugins, the standout statistic is that four out of five sites have no dedicated security plugin; and with more than 1 million plugins detected, that creates a very large attack surface.

·      Nearly 40% of the WordPress sites have a page builder plugin installed.

·      1 in 5 sites are running WooCommerce.

·      81% sites have no dedicated security plugin installed.

·      Over 1 million distinct plugins were detected, with the vast majority installed on fewer than 1,000 sites each.

Further WebPros research, conducted in partnership with CloudLinux and covering 400+ hosting providers, highlights why such security risks matter.

Need to understand the wider market shifts in 2026? It’s time to wrap your head around:

·   Why Managed WordPress is becoming an expectation

·   How security is critical to client retention

·   Why users are leaving traditional hosting environments
